Explore our unique "bird corridor" along the trail.
Our team of volunteers are passionate guardians of the Tairua River's precious estuary environment. Once quiet forests are now rich with bird song, that's to an intensive pest control campaign over many years that has allowed bird populations to re-establish themselves and flourish. Look and listen out for moho pererū (banded rail), tui, korimako (bellbird), tauhou (silvereye), piwakawaka (fantail), pīpīwharauroa (shining cuckoo), riroriro (grey warbler) and kōtare (kingfisher) among others. You’ll also see a vareity of native flora along the trail; the result of regular planting sessions from our volunteer team. We've trapped thousands of pests at more than a hundred sites along the trail, using both single-kill traps and multi-kill Good Nature traps. |
