The Hopper Rock Story

7/11/2016

TThe Hikuai District Trust in conjunction with the Coromandel Coastal Walkways decided jointly that a large rock would be a suitable monument to the memory of Ian Hopper .
The Hopper family was consulted and they agreed with the concept and supplied the words that you see on this plaque.

Storm Waters of Storm Contracting was given the task of finding a suitable rock.
Storm was party to the decision by Ian and Leigh Hopper to use rock from the Tairua quarry for all the rock work in the waterways, so it is fitting that this rock came from that quarry. Storm transported and placed it on the waterways at the beginning  of the boardwalk and the Trust are grateful for his contribution. .
The boardwalk and the waterways were both Ian Hopper initiated projects.

It is interesting that in the sailing ship days rock from this quarry was shipped to England as ballast .
We can create a link between England and Tairua through the rock. Also the Hikuai District Trust is hoping to link Tairua and Pauanui via a cycle way which starts at the rock .
The Pauanui community, the Menz Shed and the Hikuai District Trust have all worked with the Coromandel Coastal Walkways to complete this monument. It is indeed a credit to this wonderful community working together.

in the photos below Ken Bush has just attached the plaque watched by  Ian's widow Kath Hopper and Hikuai District Trust chairman Gary Fowler
